Marginal

Privacy

Updated September 30, 2026

Marginal is a reading app. It collects nothing about you. There is no account to make, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and nothing you read or write in the app is sent to us.

What stays with you

Your highlights, your notes, your handwriting and your place in each book are kept on your device. If iCloud is on for Marginal, they are also kept in your own iCloud account, so that they follow you to your other devices. That copy belongs to your Apple Account: we cannot see it, and Apple’s privacy policy covers it.

A book you bring into Marginal is stored in the app on your device. It is never uploaded.

Your notes leave the app only when you export them yourself, to wherever you choose to send them.

New Marginal Editions

From time to time Marginal checks our server for new Marginal Editions and for corrections to the ones you have, and downloads the books you ask for. These requests carry nothing about you: no identifier, no list of the books you own, nothing about how you read. The server keeps no record of who asked for what. Cloudflare, which hosts it, sees the network address of each request in order to answer it, as any web host does.

What happens on your device

Where Marginal offers to explain a passage, it uses the language model built into your device. The passage and the explanation never leave it.

Links to other sites

Some essays link to pages elsewhere on the web, which open in a browser inside the app. Those sites have their own privacy policies.

Children

Marginal collects no information from anyone, children included.

Changes

If this ever changes, this page will say so first, with the date above, before any version of the app that does it.
