Questions
- How do I write in the margin?
- With the margin open beside the book (on iPad, iPhone Duo unfolded, or iPhone turned sideways), turn on writing with the pen in the margin’s bar, then write with a fingertip, or with Apple Pencil on iPad; turn it off again to scroll. Your ink belongs to its sentence, not to a page, so it stays beside those words when you change the type size or turn the device.
- Where do I find my highlights and notes?
- In the annotations, gathered in reading order with the book’s own notes, each one a tap from its place. Show or hide your own layer like any other. To take your notes out of the app, share them from the annotations or from the book on the shelf.
- Can I read my own books?
- Yes, any EPUB without copy protection. Tap + on the shelf, or open an EPUB from the Files app or another app and choose Marginal. You can highlight it and write in its margin like any Marginal Edition, and if it has footnotes of its own, Marginal moves them into the margin. It keeps its own cover, contents page and links. Books bought from stores that lock them to their own apps (Kindle, Apple Books and most others) cannot be opened, and Marginal says so; DRM-free books come from Standard Ebooks, Project Gutenberg, and publishers who sell without DRM. Bring a book in again and it is updated in place, with your highlights and notes kept.
- Why haven’t my notes appeared on my other device?
- Your notes, ink and place travel through your own iCloud. Check that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Drive on, then open Marginal on each. Changes can take a few minutes to arrive.
- What is a Marginal Edition?
- A great book with notes beside the text, and essays, criticism and maps a tap away. Tap an underlined phrase to find its note; tap a note to return to its line. The Odyssey and The Great Gatsby are included, with more editions on the way. New editions and corrections arrive in the app without an app update.
- Which devices can I use?
- Marginal runs on iPhone with iOS 26 or later and iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. On iPhone Duo, unfold to read the book and its margin side by side. You can write with a fingertip, or use Apple Pencil on a compatible iPad.
- Does Marginal cost anything?
- No. Marginal is free, with no ads and nothing to buy.
- What does Marginal know about me?
- There is no Marginal account to create and no tracking. Your notes stay on your devices and, if enabled, in your own iCloud. See the privacy policy.
